A collection of small sculptures and functional trinket boxes made from my own Self-forming and Volcanic Porcelain recipes. It’s a reactive process that means the outer surface can vary from rolling contours to large bubbles.

These recipes are based on traditional Parian Porcelain, a clay body originally inspired by the native marble of the Greek Island, Paros. This is a self-glazing clay body with a pearl-like sheen, that has a lower maturing point compared to other porcelain types. Its more prone to slumping and warping at high temperatures, a property I chose to play around with.

I started these volcanic recipes whilst studying at the Royal College of Art, and shelved them untill I could think of a way to use them in my work. A trip to the volcanic Island of Stromboli in 2020 inspired me to revisit them.

The work is also inspired by the technical ceramic materials we continue to develop within the space exploration industry. Particularly telescopes currently monitoring Volcanic activity across our solar system, and closer to home.
